The Laboratory of Soft Energy Applications & Environmental Protection (SEALAB) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of West Attica started its operation in the late 1980s and since 1991 it has been established in the curriculum of the Department the pioneering course of Mild Forms of Energy. In the years that followed, the courses dealing with Renewable / Clean Forms of Energy and Environmental Protection, shaped a scientific and research direction, so that today the whole planet is talking about the need for saving and rational use of energy (and not only) natural resources and the carbonisation of the economy with the use of RES / RES. In a research and scientific career of about 35 years, the staff of SEALAB has contributed with all its strengths to the rapid development of RES, to the Conservation & Rational Use of Energy and to the Respect of the Environment, always for the benefit of the Greek society,
(i) Participating in more than 100 Research Projects (such as the European Programmes CRISP, TILOS, PRISMI, GREENART, BD4NRG or the Emblematic Programmes PHAROS Excellence-II, DARWEN, CLIMPACT II, JustReDI, CIRCULAR ECONOMY-NISOS, etc.)
(ii) Producing extensive and up-to-date educational work and teaching material (in Greek and English) in the fields of RES, Environmental Protection, Hybrid Energy Systems, Energy Saving in the Building Sector, etc.)
(iii) Organizing (2005) one of the first foreign language MSc in Energy/MSc in Energy Systems, in cooperation with Herriot Watt University, UK, and two stand-alone MSc in Energy & Environmental Investments/Projects and Industrial Oil & Gas Systems
(iv) Publishing more than 200 scientific articles in International Journals over the last 20-years and taking responsibility for two consecutive editing of the 2nd Volume (Wind Energy) of the Reference Encyclopedia “Comprehensive Renewable Energy, Encyclopedia by Elsevier, 1st and 2nd Edition (2012 & 2022)”, while serving in positions of responsibility in the editorial teams of highly acclaimed International Journals,
(v) Enhancing the green infrastructure of the University (Electric Vehicle Charging Facilities, Introduction of Electric Bus for the commuting of the PDA, Electric Vehicle for Air Pollution Inventory, Operation of Cogeneration Plant, Installation of Hybrid Renewable Energy Plant with Storage and Desalination, Green University Implementation Plan, etc.)
(vi) Forming a strong network of cooperation with important municipalities of our country (Tilos, Nisyros, Chalki, Kythera-Antikythera, Patmos, Agathonisi, Lesvos, Ilion, Aspropyrgos, etc.) to solve energy and environmental issues of local communities
(vii) Developing a strong network of cooperation with Greek Institutions (NTUA, AUTH, AUTH, EKPA, West. University of Crete, Polytechnic of Crete, Pan. Ioannina, ELPEPA, etc.) & Foreign University Institutions (KTH, Aachen, Sapienza, Univ. Herriot Watt, Univ. of Corsica, Univ. of East Anglia, etc.), with International (JRC, ITC, DG-Regio, etc.) and National Organizations/Bodies (EKKE, EKETA, GGEK, ELIDEK, etc.) and with large Energy Groups
The main objective of SEALAB in the current decade is to contribute to the active Education of young scientists, to the strengthening of scientific Research, for a fair green transition of the Greek economy and especially of the sensitive island regions
